Sport
and Activity around Cala Gonone
The Gulf of Orosei and its inland are the ideal settings for a holiday in sardinia, dedicated to sports and relax. The coast stretching from Cala Gonone to Capo Monte Santo hosts for more than 24 km beaches, small coves and grottos among the finest in the Mediterranean coasts, set in the calcareous cliffs above the sea.
There is no such a thing as a coast road but the paths beaten by coal men and shepherds are extraordinary trekking routes that cross nuraghi, old sheepfolds, canyons and grottos before reaching the shores.
In the same way, the mountain bike routes untie among the woody slopes of the calcareous mountains, among vines growing in hidden valleys and sheepfolds, to reach beaches, archaeological monuments, rural churches or karstic springs.
By all means, the best way to visit the coast is by kayak: in day trips or expeditions that last two or three days along famous beaches, peaceful coves, famous grottos and unexplored ones. Kayak is also the best way to visit the lake of Cedrino, with its rural churches now isolated under the water, and its two sides, one covered in calcareous rock and the other showing its typical organ-pipe basaltic
formation.
Diving and snorkeling are also practiced in the Gulf to observe flora and fauna in an uncontaminated environment, or to reach the impressive relics of two sunk ships. Otherwise, you might choose a mini-cruise on board the sailboat Dovesesto and enjoy from the shadow of its huge sails the many small coves of the Gulf, while tasting an exquisite meal served onboard.
Cala Gonone is the realm of free climbing, with its more than 400 routes of several difficulty levels. You can climb steep ascents overlooking the sea or the vertical walls of the Gorropu canyon, or else the most difficult long way of
Europe.
Other sporting facilities are also available in Calagonone for those who wish to practice tennis, clay pidgeion shooting, five-a-side football and
karting.
